Cambium’s Networks cnMatrix TX Series Switches: The Backbone of Reliable WISP Deployments
Posted: Tue Jan 28 2025

Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) operate in dynamic environments where efficiency, scalability, and reliability are highly considered. As WISPs expand their networks to meet growing demand, the need for robust infrastructure becomes evident. Cambium Networks has expanded its enterprise switching portfolio with the cnMatrix TX series switches as purpose-built solutions designed to meet the specific needs of Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs).

The Cambium cnMatrix TX switches offer a fully integrated platform that simplifies deployment operations while enhancing network performance. The TX series includes both the TX 1000 and TX 2000 models, each supporting various Power over Ethernet (PoE) standards and configurations to accommodate a wide range of devices.

Let’s explore in detail how cnMatrix TX Series Switches provide a reliable, efficient and scalable backbone for WISP deployments.

cnMatrix TX Series benefits for WISPs

The Cambium Networks’ cnMatrix TX series switches offer essential benefits to empower WISPs to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performance connectivity to their customers. These include:

1. Simplified Deployment for Complex Networks

WISPs often manage networks in remote or challenging locations, where traditional configurations can be time-consuming and error-prone. The cnMatrix TX switches’ zero-touch provisioning and automatic PoE detection streamline deployment, enabling faster setup with minimal manual intervention. This efficiency reduces operational costs while ensuring quick service activation.

2. Versatility in Device Support

WISP networks rely on diverse devices, from access points to subscriber modules and power-sensitive equipment. The Cambium cnMatrix TX switches support multiple PoE standards (802.3af/at/bt, 54V, and 24V Passive PoE), accommodating both Cambium and third-party devices. This versatility allows WISPs to build mixed-infrastructure networks without compatibility concerns.

3. Scalability for Expanding Networks

As subscriber bases grow, so does the demand for increased network capacity. The cnMatrix TX series switches provide high port densities, allowing WISPs to support more devices while maintaining reliable performance. The ability to integrate Cambium sync further ensures precise timing and synchronization for tower-based networks, which is critical for delivering consistent service quality.

4. Reliability in Harsh Environments

WISPs often operate in environments subject to extreme weather, power fluctuations, and physical wear. The cnMatrix TX series switches are designed to withstand these conditions, ensuring uninterrupted service. Features like advanced PoE power budgets and bank-based configurations offer redundancy and resilience in mission-critical WISP deployments.

5. Cost-Effectiveness and Efficiency

By consolidating multiple functions into a single device, such as PoE management and synchronization, the cnMatrix TX switches reduce the need for additional equipment. This cost-effectiveness is particularly beneficial for WISPs operating on tight budgets while striving to provide competitive services in rural or underserved areas.

Standout Features of the cnMatrix TX Series Switches

1. Flexible Powering Options

The cnMatrix TX series switches are designed to meet the diverse power requirements of Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs). These switches offer flexible AC and DC powering options, ensuring adaptability for a variety of deployment scenarios, from remote tower installations to urban network hubs.

  • AC Power Option: The TX series switches are equipped with standard AC power inputs, making them easy to deploy in environments with reliable electrical grid access. This option ensures compatibility with most urban and suburban deployments, where consistent AC power is readily available.

  • DC Power Options: For remote or off-grid locations, the TX series switches also support DC power inputs. These inputs are ideal for tower deployments and locations where DC power sources such as batteries or solar power systems are used. The DC powering option ensures WISPs can maintain network connectivity even in areas without stable AC power.

  • Redundancy and Resilience: specific models of the cnMatrix TX series offer dual power inputs, providing redundancy, to ensure that the switch remains powered even if one power source fails. Such resilience is crucial for maintaining uninterrupted service in critical infrastructure deployments.

2. PoE Capabilities

The cnMatrix TX series switches support multiple PoE standards, enabling connectivity for both Cambium products and third-party devices. The supported PoE modes include:

  • 802.3af/at/bt: Standards-based PoE providing up to 90W of power.
  • 54V Passive PoE: Delivers up to 90W of power.
  • 24V Passive PoE: Provides up to 30W of power.

By default, the switches are configured with 'Auto Detect' mode enabled, allowing for zero-configuration deployment in most scenarios. This feature automatically adjusts the PoE settings to match the connected device's requirements. For instance, devices like the PMP 450m, which require a passive mode, are automatically detected and configured appropriately.

3. Port Specifications

The cnMatrix TX 1000 and TX 2000 switches have distinct port configurations:

For the TX 1000 Series:

  • Ports 1-2: Support 802.3af/at/bt PoE (up to 30W).
  • Ports 3-4: Support 802.3af/at/bt PoE (up to 90W) and 54V Passive PoE (up to 90W).
  • Ports 5-8: Support 802.3af/at/bt PoE (up to 30W), 54V Passive PoE (up to 30W), and 24V Passive PoE (up to 15W).

For the TX 2000 Series:

  • Bank #1: Supports 802.3af/at/bt PoE (up to 30W) and 54V Passive PoE (up to 90W).
  • Bank #2: Supports 802.3af/at/bt PoE (up to 30W), 54V Passive PoE (up to 30W), and 24V Passive PoE (up to 15W).

It's important to note that the TX series switches do not support devices requiring reverse polarity power. For such devices, a power injector is necessary.
