Achieving Sustainable Public WiFi with the FTP 300 & the Fuzion NFR Program
Posted: Thu May 15 2025

By Dominic Sakwa, Technical Sales Expert

Nationwide public WiFi hotspots empower citizens with easy access to information, economic opportunities, and government services — irrespective of location or income. This is more than convenient. It’s about bridging the digital divide.

Globally, public WiFi infrastructure has transformed education, commerce, and governance in countries like Estonia, Rwanda, and India. Kenya — already lauded as the home of M-PESA and a thriving ICT sector — has what it takes to lead Africa in public WiFi hotspot connectivity. Yet as of today, this has only been narrowly achieved.

This article explores the promise and potential of public WiFi hotspots, the tangible benefits for communities and businesses, the real-world challenges that have delayed progress, and how emerging innovations like the Fuzion FTP-300 and Optace Networks’ NFR Program could finally unlock the door to universal connectivity.

What is a Public WiFi Hotspot?

A public WiFi hotspot is a wireless access point that allows users free access to the Internet at no cost or a subsidized fee. Found in public places like markets, bus stations, parks, schools, and town centers, public hotspots can enable students to learn online, entrepreneurs to run businesses, and citizens to access government services and communicate effortlessly.

Globally, public hotspots have increased access to the Internet, fueled innovation, increased access to information, and stimulated local economies.  For Kenya, a country with vibrant digital entrepreneurship but with many underserved regions, public WiFi could be transformative.

The Benefits of Public WiFi Hotspots to Communities, Businesses, and the Public

There are so many reasons public WiFi hotspots are important if made accessible, spanning across education, business, communities and the general public:

1. Education

Public WiFi hotspots can allow millions of students to access educational resources online. A UNESCO study shows that students with internet access are 47% more likely to complete secondary education than those without.

2. Entrepreneurship

This sector can leverage public WiFi hotspots to access digital marketplaces, banking services, and customer communications. According to a World Bank report, access to the internet increases business productivity by up to 25%.

3. Public Services

Public WiFi hotspots make it easier for citizens to access government services. This includes license renewals, birth registrations, motor vehicle registrations, school fee payments and other key public services.

4. Social Connectivity

Affordable Internet empowers young people to engage socially and professionally. According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, there are over 59.84 million mobile subscriptions, but mobile data bundles remain unaffordable, averaging KES 20–50 per GB. Public WiFi (hotspots) offers a cheaper alternative.

The Fuzion FTP-300:  The Breakthrough for Public Hotspot Deployment

Addressing the core challenge of reliable, sustainable power, the Fuzion FTP-300 emerges as a game-changer for public hotspot deployment.

The Fuzion FTP-300 is a compact, solar-powered networked power unit, purpose-built for remote and harsh environments — precisely the conditions facing many rural areas. Here’s why it holds the key:

  • Solar-Powered & Energy Efficient: Compatible with solar panels and equipped with high-grade MPPT, the FTP-300 reduces dependence on unreliable grid power or costly diesel generators.

  • Long-Lasting Battery Backup: Offers up to 60 hours of battery life, ensuring WiFi hotspots stay online even during cloudy or rainy days. Battery life expectancy is up to 10 years, reducing replacement cycles.

  • Remote Monitoring: With built-in IoT capabilities and remote monitoring (Smart Power feature), maintenance teams can track system health and performance without constant site visits.

  • Versatile Output Options: Powers WiFi access points, ONUs, cellular gateways, and surveillance cameras — all common components of public hotspot setups.

  • Environmentally Friendly: Each FTP-300 unit saves approximately 175 kg of CO₂ emissions annually, supporting Kenya’s green energy goals (aligned with SDG 7)

Accelerating Deployment with the Fuzion NFR Program by Optace Networks

Recognizing the pivotal role of innovative partners in realizing Kenya’s public hotspot vision, Optace Networks Limited has introduced the Fuzion Not for Resale (NFR) Program. This is a strategic initiative designed to make the deployment of the Fuzion FTP-300 more accessible and affordable for integrators, ISPs, and network operators.

The NFR Program empowers local players to test, evaluate, and integrate the FTP-300 into their networks without the burden of full retail costs — facilitating faster adoption of sustainable, solar-powered hotspot solutions.

Key Benefits of the Optace Networks - Fuzion NFR Program

1. Training & Certification

Participants receive comprehensive training and official certification as Fuzion Partners. This equips integrators and operators with in-depth knowledge of the FTP-300’s features, deployment techniques, and maintenance, ensuring confidence in large-scale rollout and long-term support.

2. Better Pricing

Through the NFR Program, certified partners gain access to the Fuzion NFR Kit, which includes 2 Fuzion FTP-300 units and essential accessories — all at a significantly discounted price. This reduces the cost barrier and enables quick proof-of-concept deployments.

3. Technical Support & Visibility

Certified partners enjoy dedicated technical support from Optace Networks’ expert team, along with value-added services. Additionally, successful deployments get featured on Fuzion and Optace Networks’ platforms as case studies — boosting the partner’s visibility in the industry.
